Our terrain is characterized by steep forested mountains, deep U-shaped valleys, streams, lakes, and saltwater straits and bays, carved out by glacial ice. The forests are broken by muskegs at all elevations and brush-free alpine areas at 2000 to 3000 feet. There are over 1,500 miles of narrow, winding gravel roads on Prince of Wales Island. Watch for logging trucks and other heavy equipment. Truck traffic monitors CB radio channels, and the Suburban is equipped with a CB.

The climate of southern Southeast Alaska is mild and moist, however, weather is unpredictable. Rainfall averages over 160 inches per year. Our winter temperatures average around freezing, and summer temperatures average 56F (ranging from 45F to 80F). High winds or low clouds can interrupt air service any time of year. Daylight on the longest day of the year is about 19 hours, with about 7 hours on the shortest day of the year. It is important to note the time of sunset while you are here, as we require you to be back at our dock one hour before sunset. Exposure to cold combined with wetness, wind and exhaustion can lead to hypothermia. Know the limitations of your body and equipment. Always a good idea to pack some extra food, clothing and a first aid kit to keep an inconvenience from turning into an emergency. We supply you with a VHF radio, so you can keep up with the daily weather forecast and for emergency use.
